I have clients come to we with questions on how to identify danger signs aging parents need help. They want to know if Mom’s forgetfulness is the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease? or is Dad’s weight loss a cause for concern? Sometimes it is difficult to determine what is safe and what is not. However there are some signals. Here are three behavior patterns that are danger signs aging parents need help.
How forgetful is forgetful? Everyone forgets sometimes but some forgetfulness can be dangerous. Begin to notice what your mom is forgetting. It is normal if she occasionally mislays the car keys, but it is not normal if she cannot remember what the car keys are for. This is a cause for concern.
Losing weight is one of the danger signs aging parents need help
Is your Dad dieting or forgetting to eat? Sometimes losing weight is healthy–maybe your dad’s doctor told him that if he loses a few pounds his arthritis won’t bother him as much. This is good weight loss. But if you notice that there is no food in the refrigerator or that none of the cans of food in the kitchen cabinets have been used, this could be a sign that something more serious is occurring. Your dad may be forgetting to eat or he is having trouble opening food containers, or maybe he can’t remember how to turn on the stove. These are signs that your dad might need help.
An untidy home can be one of several danger signs aging parents need help
Has the house always been this untidy? Let’s face it, not everyone is a great housekeeper. I look around my home and often wish I were neater. But sometimes more is going on than simple messiness. Begin to notice if your parents’ house is less tidy than usual, or if things are out of place. These are danger signs.
I started recognizing something was wrong at my parents’ home when I notice that many of the light bulbs were burnt out and my father wasn’t replacing them even through there were fresh ones in the closet. He just couldn’t be bothered.
These are just three signs that your parents might need assistance. If you are concerned about your parents, it might be time to look for safety measures that will make their life safer. They might need a home attendant to assist them with daily chores, or maybe they should consider moving to a residence where they can get more help.
